What is CTE?

Food and Finance High School is NYC's only CTE culinary high school. But what does that mean and why does it matter?

CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. Being a CTE endorsed school means that our curriculum provides academic and technical instruction related to a certain vocational content area - in our case, this is the culinary arts. In place of some electives, our students take double periods of culinary classes in professional kitchens with professional chefs as their instructors. In these classes they learn everything from the preparation of meals seen in fine dining restaurants, to the intricate science of baking, to the financial underpinnings that make a business successful. Come senior year, FFHS students are prepared to work - and they do. Through are partnerships, all FFHS seniors work paid internships at restaurants and hospitality organizations throughout New York City.

Once students graduate, not only do they receive a high school diploma, they receive a CTE endorsement that certifies that they are qualified and trained in the culinary arts. When you go applying for jobs, you may be able to say you are a chef, but a CTE endorsement from FFHS proves it.
