The students at Food and Finance High School take three years of culinary, baking and pastry alongside a full academic program. For seniors, Food Education Fund runs a capstone internship program where, following an extensive job training program, students are hired directly by some of NYC’s top restaurants and foodservice establishments for a 15-week internship which provides at least 200 paid hours of work.
STUDENT-RUN SCHOOL GROUNDS CAFE
Our newly opened student-run cafe is open to the public and located in the school with access to the outside community. In their senior year, students actually run the cafe from finances to PR to menu development with the help of the Food Education Fund program manager. This program is currently on hiatus in light of schools closing and COVID-19, we will update here when we return!
VISITING CHEF PROGRAM
Food Education Fund brings in New York City’s top chefs or restaurateurs to teach eager students an advanced culinary recipe. This program happens both within the school day as well as after school. This program is currently taking place live on our Instagram page.
ALL SCHOOL CAREER DAY
In 2019 we launched a career day with 70 guest speakers working with every single FFHS student, and culminating in the Colavita Culinary Challenge where students competed live in front of the entire school by Chef Tom Colicchio and Dana Cowin for the chance to win an all-expense-paid trip to Italy and a cash scholarship for college.
HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
FEF recently renovated a room adjacent to our newest kitchen now titled the “fresh&co Dining Lab”. Starting in the fall 2020, FEF launched a comprehensive and experiential front of house management program. We provide concrete hospitality training in the classroom in partnership with the eCornell curriculum, external opportunities including internships and job shadows, and internal opportunities including a monthly formal dining event hosted by our students.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND CULINARY COMPETITIONS
The Food Education Fund awards tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year to further the education and careers of our students and alumni. They also work in collaboration with partners including Colavita, Goya, and Sir Kensington's on a series of culinary and entrepreneurship competitions for scholarships.
