Food and Finance High School Students Win Food Network Culinary Challenge! 🎉

We are thrilled to announce that our rising seniors Carver Corbett Stewart, Zhani Russell, Aylin Sanchez, and Joy Ellington took home the top prize at this year’s Food Network Culinary Lab in New York City!

Their winning concept, “Off the Screen,” combined cooking and trivia inspired by popular media. For the final challenge, based on “A Minecraft Movie,” our students wowed the judges with a mushroom soup appetizer and lamb chops with zaatar and chimichurri, earning first place in the competition.

This incredible achievement was made possible through our partnership with the Food Education Fund, whose support provides our students with hands-on opportunities to explore careers in food, media, and hospitality.

👏 Congratulations to our talented student chefs—we are so proud of you!

Meet Mya, a student at @foodandfinancehighschool who led the catering for our #AAPIHeritageMonth Celebration at Tweed Courthouse! She created an incredible menu—including gyoza, lumpia, stir fry, and more—that reflects the vibrant diversity of different AAPI communities. Food has the power to build community and bring people together. We’re so proud of Mya and the students at Food & Finance High School for doing just that.

The New York Urban League hosts an annual Young Women’s Empowerment Day to celebrate and uplift and empower young women with opportunities to engage in major businesses and professional opportunities. This is done through mentorship, or simply exposure to successful people that look like us in roles that don’t necessarily exist in the neighborhoods we’re from.
